Xbox One - The Saga Continues

Online Petition Demands Return Of Xbox One DRM - Kotaku Australia

First up, a quick recap...  Xbox One required connection to the internet at least once a day or no games for you, but you could trade your games (with publisher permission) or lend your games, once (with publisher permission) or share your games with up to 10 members of your Xbox "family"  (with publisher... okay you get the idea).  This lead to furore which ended up with Microsoft backing away from the online DRM in what is now popularly known as the "Xbox One80".  The flipside is that the share/lend features would no longer be available.

It didn't take long for supporters of the original plan to come out of the woodwork, but it all seemed very much after the fact.  I'm sure if Microsoft had a few more voices in their corner during that turbulent week after their E3 press conference then maybe they would have considered some middle ground.

With this fabled middle ground in mind, a group of supporters have launched an online petition asking that there be some compromise, but then strangely added "Give us back the Xbox One promised at E3".  Contradicting yourselves much there guys?

If you want to check it out (or even sign it yourself) head over to change.org.  While you are there check out some of the comments.  Trust me there is some very entertaining reading, and are fair few essentially supporting it because it will help PS4 sales.

I can understand the appeal of some of the initially promised features, but are they really worth the final surrender of games ownership?  Do you really want the promise of being able to share a game amongst friends, only to have that taken away because some publisher can see all the sharing and inevitably think by restricting that feature more people will buy the game?  That is where my concern lies.  I would like to see Microsoft come back with a compromise, one that actually has some consideration for the consumer, but if they return wholesale to the original plan then it'll become the "Xbox 360" and that'll get confusing fast.
