Awesome Geek Of The Week

Teacher Confiscates Student's Phone, Sets Passcode As Answer To Maths Problem - Gizmodo Australia

After the drought of truly spectacular nerd fails led me to create this new award last week I didn't really think that I would be needing to use it again so soon.  How wrong was I.

With the prevalence of mobile telephonic devices it hardly needs to be said that bored students seeking a distraction may well turn to the device sitting in their pocket.  One maths teacher has come up with a novel solution in combatting this occurrence.  Upon returning the phone the student was told a passcode had been set up, and to unlock the phone he would need to solve the following mathematical problem.

In this instance the student learnt two valuable lessons.  First, don't use your phone in class and, secondly, make sure you have a secure passcode on it in the first place!  (Or alternatively do a factory reset of the phone)

So for creating a fine educational situation out of a disciplinary scenario I hereby award this particular maths teacher this weeks "Awesome Geek of the Week".
